There seems to currently be a limited supply and good demand on the Dutch onion market. "Prices are, therefore, at a firm level - between €0.28 and €0.30. The question is if this will last, now that processors have started up again," says Jan Zweemer of the Dutch sorting and packing company, Van Meir Onions and Potatoes. "Onion sets are growing wonderfully. We get a lot of onions from the Dutch regions of Brabant and Limburg. And, there, the onions have caught up nicely. We're not disappointed with the volumes."
"I think the demand's quite decent. England wants a lot of large onions. And the medium sizes go overseas, to far-off destinations. These include Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Haiti, and Mauritania. It's, however, vital that we don't price ourselves out of the market with these high prices. Prices in our neighboring countries are, after all, lower than ours at the moment," concludes Jan.
