"Low-price ginger from South America won't have long-term impact on Chinese ginger export"

Although the acreages dedicated to growing ginger in China this year has increased, due to the rainy weather during the growing season, the soil couldn’t be prepared, leading to a 25% cut in production. In general, ginger production in Shandong this season is roughly on par with last year. Dong Ruicai, Manager of Anqiu Sanhui Food Co., Ltd. talked about this season’s market situation and export markets.

“Prices of dried ginger exported from China to Europe are 1400-1650 Euros/ton. However, as the Chinese New Year approaches, demand in the local market is increasing, and export prices are also expected to fluctuate. Since China is the largest of the world’s ginger exporters, changes in Chinese ginger export prices will inevitably affect pricing in major overseas markets.

"When talking about the competitive advantages of Chinese ginger in overseas markets," Dong said, "Compared to other producers, the Chinese industry has a richer experience in storage, and can supply throughout the year, while other ginger exporters are currently unable to do so. Therefore, although South American ginger is quite popular in the European market this season due to lower prices, I don't think it will have a long-term impact on China's ginger export. This year we exported 500 containers of about 10,000 tons of ginger. "

"Europe is one of our major overseas markets. Over recent years, European importers have become more stringent in the quality requirements for Chinese ginger. In order to meet the increasing quality requirements, the investment costs for seedlings, labor management, and other activities are increasing. This has led to a surge in the cost of Chinese ginger and weakened export competitiveness in terms of prices. "

"In the beginning, ginger entered the European market as a condiment, but now, more and more overseas consumers are using ginger to make beverages or as medicinal ingredients. Therefore, our exports to Europe are increasing year by year." Dong said, "Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and other countries are our main sales markets in Europe. We pack products in different specifications based on the needs of different markets.”

When talking about the challenges faced by the Chinese ginger industry, Dong said, "First of all, the ginger industry as a whole needs to strengthen its cultivation management and strictly control the quality of its products. In addition, companies need to continuously improve logistics technology to cope with temperature fluctuations during long-distance transportation. I think that only if companies in the industry work together to build a Chinese brand can Chinese ginger become invincible globally. "

With more than 20 years of ginger export experience, Anqiu Sanhui Foods Co., Ltd. mainly supplies ginger to high-end markets, including major supermarkets in Europe, North America, and Japan. The company has gained GAP, organic certification, smate, BRC, GRASP and other certifications.
