For over 115 years the Aldert Kamp & Zn family business from Nieuwegein has been specialised in the trade of potatoes and coarse vegetables. The wholesaler buys from the farmer and sells his trade to cutters, grocers, export companies, wholesalers and individuals. He is looking forward to the new potato season. "Growers across the country are harvesting and there all all sorts of shapes and sizes."
"The quality and colour of the potatoes is good. The prices are also at a reasonable level, although the market is sinking slightly. It is reasonably busy in the trade for the start of July. The demand is sinking slightly during the holidays, as it usually does, but the real potato people continue to buy them," says the wholesaler from Nieuwegein.
Cabbage also had a particularly good price over the past season. "Last year was dramatic, and many growers even had to stop, but this year more than made up for it," says Ard. "Within the next two weeks we will switch from the old to the new white cabbage and the new red cabbage is already available on the market."
Although cabbage is often seen as a winter vegetable, the sales of the vegetables continue throughout the year according to Kamp. "There aren't as many full kilos of cabbage, but it is very popular in the summer cut up in a big or processed into a salad. At the moment the market is quite empty, so the new cabbage is starting with good prices. How the market will continue largely depends on the weather, but if it remains this dry, it will be another special year!"
