Peru is one of the largest exporters of asparagus in South America, and asparagus exports account for 42.6% of the country's total horticultural product exports. In the first two months of 2019 exports of this product amounted to 65.5 million dollars, i.e. 9.5% less than the profit obtained in the same period of 2018, according to a report by the Center for Business Research (CIE) of PERUCĂMARAS.
The Peruvian asparagus producing regions that led exports were La Libertad and Ica, with 36.5 and 22.9 million dollars respectively. They were followed by Lambayeque, which had a 69.2% increase in production over the previous season.
The main destination market for the Peruvian asparagus was the United States with a 39.4% share of the total exported, equivalent to 25.9 million dollars; it was followed by Spain with 19.6% of the total and 12.8 million dollars.
Exports to the European Union have increased this season, with 14.4% of the total and 9.5 million euro corresponding to the Netherlands, and 7.6% of exports and 5 million euro to the United Kingdom.
