Chinese consumers increase demand for top-quality imported fruit

Import and export is the core business for Shenzhen Yuanxing Fruit Products Co., Ltd. (hereafter 'Yumsun'). This company is specialized in plantation and harvest, processing and storage, import and export, sales and distribution, and end-stage retail. Yumsun is a supply chain company that integrates all five of these fields. The people at Yumsun work hard to bring top-quality, delicious fruits to the consumer's table in China and abroad. In this way they try to satisfy the different demands from various markets. A spokesperson for Yumsun recently explained how the company is able to stay ahead in the ever-changing market and accomplish innovation in the industry.

Yumsun began 32 years ago as an export company. The company established 7 large plantations in China: Korla pears, apples, and grapes in Xinjiang, Gong pears in Hebei, apples in Shaanxi, apples in Shandong, and oranges in Jiangxi. At the same time Yumsun had a dragon fruit packaging factory constructed in Vietnam. Their successful model was duplicated abroad. The Yumsun team carries out strict product quality control, whether the fruit is imported or exported. This is to ensure that the products only enter the market if the product quality is excellent.

As for the export destinations, Yumsun exports fruit to Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia. The volume of fruit exported to Southeast Asia is relatively large. This is mainly because Southeast Asian markets are close to China and distribution is convenient. Furthermore, the short transport route helps to guarantee product quality upon arrival. Another reason is the customs procedure. Europe and the Americas have complicated, time-consuming import procedures, which makes exporting to Southeast Asia relatively easy. As for import, Yumsun imports a wide variety of top-quality fruit from important production areas all across the globe, such as apples from New Zealand, grapes from Australia, oranges from Egypt, oranges from the USA, cherries from Chile, dragon fruit from Vietnam, and durian from Thailand. The main import products from the West are apples, grapes, and oranges. The main import product from Southeast Asia is dragon fruit, with an annual import volume of around 1000-2000 shipping containers. Import accounts for around 80% of the company's business, while export accounts for the remaining 20%. This 20% is mainly for the benefit of export to Southeast Asia.

Yumsun selects from different production areas all across the globe for the purchase of top-quality fruit to satisfy varied consumer demands and provide year-round supply of fresh fruit to the Chinese market. Take grapes for example, the import season of grapes from South Africa only just came to an end, and the supply season of grapes from India immediately followed in late April. Afterwards, Australian grapes enter the market in large volumes around the same time as the Chilean grape season is at its peak. Their key strategy is to visit the production area with their own inspection team, no matter in which country the production area is. Their inspection team visits the plantation to check local conditions, fruit quality, weather conditions, harvest, and packaging. Yumsun employees carry out reasonable evaluations in each production area and predict Chinese market developments before they make accurate arrangements for fruit import.

As for branding and promotion, Yumsun looks at the unique requirements in different markets, consumer preferences, and product characteristics before deciding on the most suitable logo. The brand that receives most positive consumer feedback is Yumsum. Yumsun also carefully considers the selection of import and export harbors and target markets. The majority of fruits imported by Yumsun enter the country via Hong Kong, which is the most convenient and fastest harbor. The imported fruits are then transported to wholesale markets and supermarkets in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. The markets in Shenzhen and Guangzhou are the commercial backbone of Yumsun. Jiangnan Wholesale Market in Guangzhou provides a particularly efficient and convenient sales and distribution channel for imported fruits. Yumsun established offices in both Shenzhen and Guangzhou to handle daily business there. At the same time, Yumsun cooperates with several companies in Shanghai. The fruits imported by Yumsun find a welcome market in Shanghai as well.

Yumsun considers expanding into new markets. The import volume of fruits has rapidly increased in recent years. The fruit markets in first- and second-tier cities all across China are gradually becoming saturated. The room for commercial opportunities is shrinking fast. At the same time, however, the level of consumption in second- and third-tier cities in China is on the rise as disposable income grows. This development also results in growing demand for top-quality fruits such as imported fruits. It is for this reason that Yumsun, while continuing to develop the current market share, also invests in the expansion of their market share in second- and third-tier cities. The supply-chain company already established new retail points in Wuhan and Xi'an in the last two years precisely for the development of new markets. These retail points will function as stepping stones for market expansion in second- and third-tier cities. In addition to this, Yumsun also participates in fruit and vegetable exhibitions organised in Hong Kong and Shanghai to further promote their fruit brands.
