This year Peru will export some 335 thousand tons of Hass avocado, a similar volume to the one it dispatched in the previous campaign, stated the president of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass), Daniel Bustamante Canny.
He said avocado production would be the same as in 2018 because of a decrease in yields of mature plantations and productive increases in young plantations, which would balance the production.
However, the president of ProHass said that the 2019 campaign would last more because the new plantations -mainly in the north of the country- begin to produce earlier.
"In the previous campaigns the important shipping volumes started in May, now there will be an increase in volumes in April. This is a very positive thing as we won't create any peaks in the market and there will be a more stable supply in the world," he added.
Better market conditions
Bustamante, who is also the commercial manager of Agricola Cerro Prieto (ACP), said that both Asia and the United States would receive higher volumes of Peruvian Hass avocados this year. He said that the market in Asia was new and growing, and that the United States production was expected to decrease, so there would be more orders for Peruvian avocados.
"Those two markets will take some of the fruit that would have been destined for Europe and that could complicate this market. There will also be less avocado supply in Europe because South Africa will also have a reduction in its production. In general, we expect better market conditions than last year," he said.
Peru hopes to enter South Korea and Thailand this year
Daniel Butamante also said that ProHass had been working closely with the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) with the aim of achieving the entry of Hass avocados from Peru to Southeast Asian countries, such as South Korea and Thailand this year. However, he added, there are still some points that the phytosanitary authorities must resolve.
The president of ProHass also highlighted the presence of Peruvian Hass avocado at the Fruit Logistica 2019 fair that took place from February 6 to 8 in Berlin (Germany), where it had an important participation and many buyers from all over the world expressed interest in this product.
