Looking back on week 12 at the import market in Shanghai

China: Market price rises for avocados and grapefruit

Last week, it rained constantly in the Shanghai region. In general, all imported products are selling at a slower rate, but avocados from Mexico and Chile, and Israeli grapefruit have filled a gap in the supply. Their market prices are rising and sales are good.

Nowadays, avocado producers, like Mexico and Chile, are all experiencing a gap between two harvesting seasons. The supply of avocados on the Chinese market is in general rather low and the price for a bag of 6kg of avocados in the Shanghai market stabilized at 44 EUR (330 RMB); the same as as four weeks ago. The new goods arrived on Thursday. Yet, the prices all went down by 1.33-2.68 EUR (10-20 RMB). However, the price for a bag of 6kg of Mexican avocados (containing 30 pieces) remains between 41-44 EUR (310-330 RMB), and a bag of 4kg (with 20 pieces) of Chilean avocados is set at 22-29 EUR (210-220 RMB). Sales are going smoothly.

The Israeli grapefruit finds itself in similar circumstances. Because the supply in the northern hemisphere has been gradually reducing, and South-African grapefruit has not yet entered the season for harvest and packing, the supply is lower than the demand. Consequently, a box of Israeli grapefruit, holding 40 pieces (18kg in total) that arrived last Tuesday had an opening price of 36 EUR (270 RMB) and was sold out very quickly. In comparison, Israeli tangerines have never met such a favorable market opportunity. Boxes of 10kg stand at 27 EUR (200 RMB) and are sold off easily as well.

The Chilean Gala is now available. In the past two weeks the amount of goods in the Chinese market has reduced, but because a supply of New-Zealand apples that ripened earlier than expected, arrived, and because the American and French apples are still being sold, the enthusiasm of customers is not very high. Although first class fruits open at a price of 33 EUR (250 RMB), special class fruits opened at 36 EUR (270 RMB) (1130 pieces in a standardized 18kg box), the selling process has been very slow. In comparison, New Zealand apples rely on an advantage in taste to occupy a position in the high-end apple market. The variety that was ripened early, Breeze apples, had an opening price of 56 EUR (420 RMB) (a box of 18kg with 80 pieces), the price for the traditional high-end Queen apples also remained between 52-53 EUR(390-400 RMB) (a box of 18 kg with 90 pieces). Sales were encouraging.

At the same time, the first batch of Angelinos started being sold as soon it arrived on the Shanghai market. A box of 9kg with 48 pieces has a standard price of approximately 23 EUR (170 RMB). Sales are going well. Under that influence, sales of the Chilean Pink delight have somewhat slowed down in comparison to last week, but the price still remains at around 27 EUR (200 RMB) (48 pieces).

Another new product coming from Chile, nectarines, has performed well in this week's market. Although this is the first time they've entered China, they are already loved in the market. This is because they have an excellent taste and because the nectarine season is coming to its end. On March 23rd the Chilean Chamber of Commerce in China organized an event in Beijing to promote the Chilean nectarines and avocados. Jin Long, from the Chinese subsidiary of the largest Chilean nectarine exporting company, Gesex, explains: "Although Chile officially started exporting nectarines to China last year, the nectarines will only arrive in China at the end of this season, because procedures will only finish in Spring. The main varieties are the Arctic Snow and the August Red. The new season will start in October-November this year and will fill a supply gap in the Chinese market.
