China: Garlic export prices slide

"In the past few years, the market price for garlic has been soaring. This is mainly due to three factors. Firstly, the 2014 prices were too low, so many garlic farmers reduced the acreage in 2015, which directly led to a decline in output and a reduction in the volumes sent to storage, especially of the top quality garlic. Secondly, many garlic farmers combined with speculators to hoard produce and manipulate the market to artificially inflate prices. Thirdly, the general market for bulk food produce was in a downturn, so investors turned their attention to agricultural products," said Tony from Qingdao Wohing Food.

"Shandong province is one of the main producing areas of garlic in China. Driven by the high profit potential of the industry, Shandong garlic farmers have expanded the area of garlic planting, especially in Jinxiang. In addition, the fair weather this winter has been fvourable to high levels of production which is projected to increase by about 20% this year."

"Our company produces garlic and exports to Indonesia, Brazil, Bangladesh and other countries. Southeast Asia is our main export market. In the past week, export prices fell by about 10% for a variety of reasons. Personally speaking, I think the main reason is that garlic farmers are expected to increase the production and sell out quickly, which significantly lowers the sales prices. "

"At the present stage, garlic stocks in Jinxiang are about 300,000 tons and the current market transactions are not very active. With the introduction of Yunnan early maturing garlic in March, the price of stored garlic will be affected, and could fall by as much as 30%. The exports to Europe will end in April so the listing of Yunnan garlic will have an impact on those. But the Southeast Asian and the Middle East markets will remain normal. Currently there are so many uncertain market factors, it is difficult to say how much impact will be caused. "

"Our company was established in 1985, and our headquarters are in Hongkong, based on garlic, ginger and apple exports. We started importing American apples and oranges a few years ago. In Jining city of Shandong province, China, we have about 15 hectares of planting base."
