Migros and Coop around 36% more expensive than German chains

The prices of food in Switzerland have remained equal or decreased slightly, depending on the supplier. Along with the slightly stronger Euro and increases in prices from abroad this has led to small price differences between Swiss food chains and food chains from the four neighbouring countries, reports the Swiss website Schweizmagazin.ch.

Since the latest price research was done in March 2013 the prices of internationally available foods in Coop (-0.56%) and Denner (-1.57%) have gone down and remained almost the same in Migros (+0.06%). Denner remains the cheapest Swiss supermarket chain - a shopping basket with 43 identical products costs around 4% more at Migros and 5% more at Coop. On the whole the prices in the three large Swiss chains varied little.

Compared to other countries the price differences have reduced. The price level is now at around the same as that in Italy. Compared to Austria the differences have become around 10% smaller. But the difference in price compared to Germany and France is still big: Migros and Coop are both 36% more expensive than the cheapest German chain (Kaufland) and French chain (Casino).
