Australia develops GCC export project for melon growers

Australian melon growers will take part in a new project aimed at strengthening export opportunities in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets. The initiative focuses on building a clearer understanding of market conditions and establishing commercial connections to support long-term industry development.

Hort Innovation CEO Brett Fifield said, "This project is about creating practical, targeted strategies that help Australian melon growers succeed in international markets. By leveraging expert insights and in-market engagement, we're positioning our industry to capture new opportunities and deliver premium quality melons to buyers in the Gulf region."

The project, led by Export Connect, will take a practical approach to developing market knowledge for Australian horticulture. Planned activities include supermarket visits and buyer meetings during Gulfood, supported by a market insights report covering competitors, pricing, and potential customer profiles. This information will be used to inform future export planning and provide growers with a clearer understanding of conditions in key destinations.

Expected outcomes include improving export readiness within the melon industry, increasing visibility in selected GCC markets, and identifying commercial opportunities that may support export growth. Insights gathered through the project will contribute to future decision-making for levy payers.

The project is funded by Hort Innovation through the melon research and development levy and contributions from the Australian Government.
