Consumption is not growing and possibly falling, while potato areas and yields have grown in 2025. This means that there is a lot of product available and prices are low, as also confirmed by Domenico Citterio, president of Rucip, the European potato trade regulation committee.

"The market in Europe is under pressure as there is a large availability of products. The planted areas were expanded, and the season allowed good yields in the main production areas. The only doubt lies in storage, i.e., whether all the stored product will hold up or whether there will be losses in the coming months," reported Citterio.
To this, we must add a stagnation in demand from both the industry and the fresh market. "Consumption seems to be declining and, in any case, it has certainly not grown, which is slowing down destocking. It is rare to be in a situation where both the industry and the fresh market are stalled, but that is exactly what we are seeing now, and the situation has been like this for a few months."

Even the weather of the past few weeks, with temperatures more akin to September than November, has certainly not favoured potato consumption. "Prices are so low that I really do not think they will drop any further - at least I hope," said Citterio.
Regarding Rucip, it was created by Europatat and Euppa. Europatat brings together the various European associations, including our Italian Fruitimprese, while Euppa groups the processing industries. Together, they try to determine rules for marketing at the European level.
