Zucchiolo vegetable launched in U.S. market this year

A new vegetable called Zucchiolo® is making its debut in the U.S. produce market this year, brought exclusively by Malena Produce. Originating from Southern Spain, Zucchiolo is neither a zucchini nor a cucumber- it is a distinct and naturally developed variety that has quickly gained attention across Europe for its unique characteristics and versatility.

Zucchiolo can be eaten fresh or cooked, offering consumers a new flavor experience and texture that fits well in salads, stir-fries, or grilled dishes. Available in both green and yellow varieties, this vegetable combines a mild, refreshing taste with a high nutritional value—rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants.

After winning the Innovation Award at Fruit Logistica Berlin 2024, Zucchiolo expanded rapidly in several European countries including Spain, France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, and Denmark. Now, Malena Produce becomes the first company to introduce it in North America, continuing its commitment to innovation and differentiation in the fresh produce industry.

"We are constantly exploring ways to add value to our partners and consumers through innovation," said Luis Galaviz, Business Development Manager at Malena Produce. "Zucchiolo represents the next step in expanding the variety of healthy, high-quality vegetables available in the U.S. and Canada."

While the product has only recently entered the North American market, interest is growing among chefs and select retailers seeking to offer consumers something new and visually appealing in the vegetable category.
