Fruits make up 50 percent of this week’s produce ads

From miniature to pie varieties to jumbo-sized pumpkins, the fruit featured prominently in stores and advertisements this week. Eighteen varieties of apples were also reported, suitable for baking, snacking, or use in desserts. Other fruits such as grapes, pears, persimmons, pomegranates, and cranberries added to the seasonal flavor of ads. Vegetables, including acorn and butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes, rounded out the harvest season offerings. Potted and fresh-cut marigolds were also featured for seasonal displays.

Total ad numbers this week were 293,986, a 5% decrease from last week's total of 308,054. The total for the same week last year was 5% lower, at 279,845. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 147,683 (50%), onions and potatoes 22,463 (8%), vegetables 116,857 (40%), herbs 2,257, ornamentals 1,108, hemp 4,424, and honey 1,451.

The number of ads for organic produce was 49,979, accounting for 17% of total ads.

Among major advertised items (3,000-plus ads), price changes compared to the same week last year included Honeycrisp apples (per lb.) up 18% and apple juice (64 oz.) up 13%. Notable decreases were seen for Bartlett pears (per lb.), down 23%, yellow peaches (per lb.), down 18%, and cantaloupes (each), down 10%.

For potatoes and onions, the only major change was a 37% increase for yellow onions (3 lb). In vegetables, asparagus prices rose 18%, while large pumpkins saw an 11% decrease.
