U.S. market update shows Peru blueberries at $40 per flat

The latest market reports show shifting volumes, pricing, and quality trends across major fresh produce categories. Below is a summary of current trading conditions and movement for key crops.

Asparagus
Movement from Peru imported through Southern California ports is expected to increase. Trading is fairly active, and prices are higher. Eleven-pound cartons of bunched green jumbo are mostly at US$46.75, extra-large at US$44.75–46.73, large at US$36.75–37.75, standard at US$32.75, and small at US$26.75. Movement from Mexico through Arizona, California, and Texas is expected to decrease slightly.

Avocado
Mexican movement through Texas is expected to remain about the same. Trading is fairly slow, and prices for some sizes are lower. Hass carton 2-layer 32s are mostly US$36.25–38.25, 36s at US$28.25–32.25, 40s at US$23.25–25.25, 48s at US$21.25–23.25, 60s and 70s at US$20.25–22.25, and 84s at US$20.25–22.25. Organic 48s are mostly US$36.25–38.25, 60s at US$34.25–36.25, and 70s at US$30.25–34.25. California's South District movement is expected to decrease seasonally, with prices mixed depending on size.

Blueberry
Imports from Peru through Miami, Philadelphia, and New York are expected to increase as the season progresses. Trading is very active with flats of 12 one-pint cups, large priced at US$40.00. Movement from Mexico is also expected to increase seasonally, though supplies are currently insufficient to establish a market. Chilean imports through Philadelphia are beginning, with the first F.O.B. report expected the week of October 26.

Cucumber
Mexican movement through Otay Mesa, California, is expected to decrease. Medium 1 1/9-bushel cartons are US$14.00–15.00, with fair quality at US$11.00–13.00 and ordinary quality at US$7.00–8.00. Mexican crossings through Texas are also expected to decrease slightly, with medium cartons mostly US$8.95–9.95 and fair quality at US$6.95. Movement from South Georgia is steady, with medium cartons mostly US$8.35 and fair quality US$5.35–6.35.

Green bell pepper
Movement from California's South District is expected to decrease seasonally. Trading is moderate and prices are higher, with extra-large cartons at US$17.95–18.95 and large at US$16.95–18.95. Movement from Mexico and South Georgia is expected to increase in the coming weeks, while Michigan supplies are decreasing seasonally.

Tomato
Mexican movement through Texas is steady. Vine Ripes cartons 2-layer 4x4–4x5s are US$8.95–9.95 and 5x5–5x6s are US$7.95–8.95. California's Central District movement is unchanged, with extra-large mature greens at US$8.35–9.35, large at US$9.35, and medium at US$7.35. Movement through Otay Mesa, California, is decreasing slightly with 2-layer 4x4–4x5s mostly US$11.00–13.00. Harvest in North Florida and South Georgia is expected to begin the week of October 12.
