“Tanzania’s price corrections have boosted avocado popularity in India”

India's avocado market is undergoing a transformation, particularly because of the duty-free status enjoyed by Tanzanian avocados, says Hanissh Battra, CEO of fresh fruit importer Ever Green Fruits. "Tanzanian avocados have overtaken traditional origins from Peru, Chile, Kenya, and New Zealand. With Tanzania's duty-free access and quicker transit times, the dynamics have shifted almost entirely in its favor."

According to Battra, "Tanzanian avocados now reach Indian ports in just 12 to 14 days, compared to the 25 to 35 days for fruit shipped from Latin America or Oceania. This logistics advantage brings fresher fruit at notably lower costs to importers and end buyers, with considerable improvements seen in availability too."

Unlike in the past, when Indian importers had to juggle between origins, Battra says they can now rely on a single source for most of the year. "Tanzanian orchards are well-positioned to supply consistently, and their harvest season aligns well with India's growing demand. The Hass variety has become the undisputed favorite among Indian consumers, retailers, and food service."

Battra further explains how lower-priced avocados mean a wider consumption net spread across the nation, beyond urban regions. "With huge arrivals, prices have dropped significantly compared to previous years when supply was more limited and dependent on duty-paying origins. This price correction has been crucial in transforming avocados from a niche, premium fruit into one that is accessible to a much wider consumer base."

While Tanzanian avocados have gained significant ground, Battra shares some of the ongoing logistical challenges: "Direct shipping routes from East Africa are limited, and reliable cold chain management is essential. Education in storage and ripening practices among distributors and retailers is equally needed." He also notes that Latin American suppliers, especially from Peru and Chile, still bring strong branding and marketing distinctions, which challenge Tanzanian origins.

Looking ahead, Battra emphasizes the importance of overcoming challenges in quality consistency, cold chain management, and consumer education to sustain growth. "While Peru and Chile will continue to compete in the premium segment, Tanzania's competitive pricing and logistics advantage can help scale India's avocado consumption to mainstream levels."
