Availability of kiwis in India is currently healthy, both in quantity and quality, with the vast majority being imported, says Ashok Agarwal, CEO of fresh produce importer Triyambakam International. "Domestic production, mainly from the northern and north‑eastern states, remains limited, and local supply is far from meeting overall demand," he adds.
According to Agarwal, Chilean kiwis have a strong presence in the Indian market, appreciated for their quality and firmness, which contribute to a long shelf life. "The Chilean season typically runs from April through August, and this year's crop maintained consistent quality despite the long transit times."

From late August, Iran is expected to emerge as the leading supplier, with volumes projected to be about 150% higher than last year, thanks to favourable production. "The fruit's short seven‑day transit time helps preserve firmness, while competitive pricing, a wide choice of sizes, and reliable availability give it a clear edge in the market. The main imported variety will be the Hayward in commercial sizes ranging from 33 to 42 count. Their season will run through January," Agarwal explains.
Pricing for Iranian kiwis is expected to remain competitive this year, supported by higher production. "Last season, rates peaked at USD 3.40 per 10 kg crate, triggering a market crash, but we anticipate far more favorable prices this time," says Ashok Agarwal. "More arrivals from Chile have already kept the market competitive, as importers preferred to sell quickly to preserve firmness, keeping pricing under control."

Agarwal notes that other origins in the market include Greece and Italy, though longer transit times sometimes impact firmness. New Zealand ranks fifth in volume after Iran, Chile, Greece, and Italy. New Zealand fruit matches Chile in quality but commands a smaller share due to later arrivals and higher costs."
Looking ahead, Agarwal is eyeing imports of Italian kiwis for the first time, citing comparable taste and pricing. "We expect the coming months to bring Iranian Hayward fruit at the best rates, driving more sales, higher revenues, and opportunities to tap unutilised markets across India."
