Kyrgyzstan's banana imports hit an all-time high in 2024, totaling 37,100 tonnes worth $27.2 million, according to the National Statistical Committee. This represents a 30% increase from 2023 (28,500 tonnes, $18.65 million), and nearly double the 2020 pandemic low of 20,000 tonnes ($9.2 million). The steady growth in recent years reflects rising consumer demand and improved supply chains.
Ecuador remains the primary supplier, accounting for 87% of total imports. Other sources included China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and smaller volumes from Turkey and India. However, bananas from Russia and Kazakhstan are typically re-exports of Latin American fruit. In June 2025, banana shipments from China dropped nearly 29-fold year-on-year.
Despite being a landlocked country with no local banana production, Kyrgyzstan exports a small portion of imported bananas, mostly to Uzbekistan. Re-exports reached 296 tonnes in 2024, compared to 39 tonnes in 2023.
Bananas are typically imported green in refrigerated containers and ripened in ethylene chambers upon arrival. Direct imports from Ecuador are significantly cheaper than bananas routed through intermediaries in Russia or Kazakhstan, with retail prices reflecting logistics costs. In 2024, retail prices ranged from 150 to 170 Kyrgyz soms ($1.70–1.95) per kilogram in Bishkek.
The market is served by several large importers and distributors, including Fresh Berry and Velarosa Bananas, who manage sourcing, cold storage, and distribution. As demand grows, Kyrgyz companies increasingly prefer direct sourcing to cut costs and ensure supply stability.
