Santa Catarina is forecasting a 17.5% production increase for the 2024/25 banana harvest, potentially hitting 768,000 tons, with the cultivated area now totaling 28,400 hectares. Projections indicate banana-caturra production will climb by 18%, while banana-prata is expected to grow by 15.2% compared to the previous season.
Socioeconomics and Rural Development analyst Rogério Goulart Júnior from Epagri/Cepa highlights the impact of weather, stating, "We had frequent rain and a frost in June that compromised the quality of the bunches. Many producers had to harvest before the ideal ripening point, which further impacted the market."
Santa Catarina experienced a decrease in banana-caturra and banana-prata prices in May and June 2025, with caturra prices dropping 25.3% due to increased supply. Prata prices fell by 16.4% amid competition from seasonal fruits and reduced demand. However, caturra prices are expected to recover in July, owing to slower fruit development. Prata prices are forecasted to stabilize with balanced demand.
The Foreign Trade thematic panel from Agro Catarinense Observatory reports that Santa Catarina leads Brazil's banana exports in 2025. From January to June, Brazil exported 43,800 tons, earning US$15.7 million. Santa Catarina accounted for 21,800 tons, generating US$7.2 million, marking a 103% increase from 2024. Main importers include Argentina and Uruguay, responsible for 62% and 37.8% of exports, respectively. Rogério Goulart Júnior notes a positive international outlook, with improved export prices likely despite a seasonal supply drop.
