Mid-July produce market shows stable supply, mixed prices

Produce movement across North America remains steady, with some seasonal shifts and pricing changes noted across key fruit and vegetable categories. The following summarizes market conditions, pricing, and trade activity as reported.

Asparagus
Movement from Mexico through Arizona, California, and Texas is expected to remain steady. Early trading was moderate but slowed later in the week, with prices trending lower. Eleven-pound cartons/crates that are large are mostly $18.75–$20.75, and standard are $14.75–$16.75. Some open sales were booked with prices yet to be determined. In contrast, imports from Peru through Southern California ports are steady with moderate trading and slightly higher prices. Jumbo bunched are $34.00–$36.75, extra-large mostly $28.00–$30.00, large at $22.00–$22.95, and standard mostly $20.00.

Avocado
Mexican crossings through Texas remain consistent. Trading for 32-40s is fairly slow, while others are fairly active. Conventional 36-40s and organic 48s are priced lower, but 60-84s are higher. Two-layer Hass cartons show 32s at $52.25–$54.25, 36s at $49.25–$51.25, 40s mostly $44.25–$46.25, and 48s mostly $42.25–$45.25. Organic 48s are $70.25, and 60s range from $62.25–$64.25.

Blueberry
Movement from Oregon and Washington is stable, with fairly active trading. Prices remain generally unchanged. Flats of 12 6-oz cups with lids are mostly $14.00–$16.00; 12 1-pint cups are $19.00–$21.00. Organic versions are higher, with 6-oz cups mostly $17.00–$19.00 and pints at $26.00–$29.00. Imports from Peru are beginning to increase, though supplies are limited. Canadian shipments through Northwest Washington are increasing seasonally, with moderate trading and prices for Canada One flats of 12 1-pint cups at $18.00–$20.00.

Cucumber
Movement through Otay Mesa, California, is steady. Trading was moderate early but slowed later. Prices for 36s are lower; 1 1/9-bushel cartons of medium are mostly $14.00–$15.00, large $13.00–$14.00, and fair quality $12.00. Cartons of 36s are mostly $8.00. Through Texas, movement is expected to decrease. Prices for medium are mostly $17.95–$18.95, fair quality $14.95–$15.95, ordinary quality $8.95–$9.95, and large mostly $20.95–$22.95.

Tomato
Movement from Central California is steady. Trading is active with stable prices. Twenty-five-pound cartons of loose Mature Greens (extra-large, large, and medium) are priced at $8.35. Mexico crossings through Texas show moderate trading with slightly higher prices for 4x4–5x5s and steady 5x6s. Two-layer Vine Ripes range from $10.95–$14.95, depending on size. Loose 25-pound cartons are mostly $11.95–$15.95. Otay Mesa crossings show active trading and much higher prices.

Bell pepper
Harvest in the San Joaquin Valley, California, is expected to begin the week of July 20, with the first F.O.B. report due the week of July 27. Quality is expected to be generally good.
