Extreme weather in early July poses serious risks to Ukrainian horticulture

In early July 2025, Ukraine experienced weather conditions that seriously threatened fruit and vegetable crops, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

Record-breaking heat hit several regions, with temperatures exceeding historical highs by 1–2°C in western, central, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy oblasts. The south, east, and parts of central Ukraine experienced extreme drought and strong dry winds, leading to rapid soil dehydration. In some areas, vegetable crops wilted or even died.

Conversely, western regions saw intense rainfall, hail, and stormy winds, causing crop lodging and waterlogging. Excessive moisture triggered outbreaks of fungal diseases. In Lviv and Ternopil oblasts, rainfall reached record levels.

These contrasting extremes are making it significantly harder to manage orchards, berry fields, and vegetable crops, and may result in reduced yields in the most affected areas.
