USDA launches MRL guide to aid specialty crop exports

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) has launched a new resource to support American farmers in accessing international trade opportunities. The Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) Quick Reference Sheets provide essential information about pesticide residue requirements in major export markets for U.S. producers and shippers of fruits, vegetables, nuts, pulses, and other horticultural crops.

FAS developed the MRL Quick Reference Sheets in partnership with Bryant Christie Inc. These sheets will be updated every six months and will eventually cover 60 different specialty crop commodities. They are free, easily accessible, and downloadable for American farmers and businesses.

The format of the MRL Quick Reference Sheets allows for convenient downloading and use at the field level by growers and input suppliers. They include data on hundreds of active ingredients and their corresponding MRLs across major export markets for 60 crops.

Through the Assisting Specialty Crop Exports Initiative, USDA is creating tools to help American produce and nut exporters understand and comply with foreign regulatory requirements. These efforts aim to unlock new export opportunities and address trade barriers in global markets.

MRLs refer to non-harmful amounts of residues, such as pesticides, that may remain on or in a food product when the pesticide is used according to label directions. Because MRLs vary by country and can be complex to track, FAS provides several programs and resources to support U.S. exporters, including direct engagement with foreign governments to resolve MRL-related trade issues.
