At the Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter, a new variety of sweet potato named Avoyelles has been introduced. This development coincides with the 75th anniversary of the LSU AgCenter's potato research center. Jeffery Cole Gregory, a sweet potato specialist at the LSU AgCenter, highlighted the significance of this release, marking the first introduction of a new sweet potato variant in over ten years. The Avoyelles variety boasts enhanced durability compared to its predecessors.
Jason Ables, president of the United States Sweet Potato Council, noted the Avoyelles variety's early maturation, approximately 15 to 20 days sooner than other types, which facilitates quicker harvesting and storage processes. Additionally, this variety is characterized by its high yield and resistance to root-knot nematodes, a common pest affecting sweet potatoes. The introduction of the Avoyelles variant is anticipated with enthusiasm among farmers and growers. Gregory mentioned that the new sweet potato would be available in limited quantities initially, with full availability expected by the next Thanksgiving season, aligning perfectly with traditional holiday recipes.
