Following a recent business trip to China, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Tran Thanh Nam, announced positive developments for Vietnamese avocado and passion fruit growers, as well as animal breeders. During the trip, both sides reached agreement on several agricultural and rural development matters.
In discussions with the Chinese General Administration of Customs, China consented to expand its fruit market, permitting the import of Vietnamese avocados and passion fruits once the necessary procedures and protocols are completed. The decision will stabilize sales for Vietnamese avocado and passion fruit growers, given their extensive cultivation areas.
In 2023, Vietnam's agricultural exports to China grew by 17% to $12.2 billion, making China the top importer of Vietnamese farm produce, surpassing the US. With improved conditions for market access, further growth is anticipated this year. Border agencies from both countries have committed to regular meetings to address issues related to agricultural import/export activities.
Further agreements with Guangdong provincial authorities will establish a two-way logistics chain, facilitating the export of Vietnamese fruits to Chinese wholesale markets. Additionally, Shenzhen Farm Produce Center has allocated a booth for Vietnam's OCOP (one commune, one product) initiative, with Vietnamese durian being a popular choice among Chinese consumers.
