Moroccan avocado exports to Germany reach record high

Along with other destinations, Morocco has been actively increasing its avocado exports to Germany, reports EastFruit. The exports to the German market have more than quadrupled since the MY 2016/17 (Jul-Jun) and reached 5,000 tonnes valued at $17 mln.

Moroccan avocado exporters have been setting records in their sales volumes for the past several seasons in a row. The total exports have more than quadrupled over the past 6 years, and Morocco has become the 9th largest exporter of avocados globally.

The current season was not an exception, and Morocco exported 45,000 tonnes of avocados valued at $139 mln in July 2022 – May 2023. In addition, Moroccan exporters have widened their sales geography. There were 19 importing countries six years ago, while currently this number grew to 25.

Spain, France, and the Netherlands account for the largest share in the total avocado exports from Morocco. Meanwhile, Germany has been increasing avocado imports as well. In 2017, Germany was the 7th largest importer of avocados globally and then ranked 5th in 2022. Surprisingly, Mexico, the global leader in avocado exports, has been constantly decreasing exports to Germany. In the MY 2022/23, the Mexican avocado exports to Germany fell to zero.

The Netherlands and Spain are still the leading suppliers of avocados to the German market, but the country has been also developing alternative sources. As a result, in the MY 2022/23, the Moroccan share in the total avocado imports in Germany amounted to 4.7% and was more than 10% in November-February.

Avocado is the fastest growing position in the global horticultural exports, and the modern world of healthy foods has been favoring an increase in the global demand for avocados. It is expected that avocados would be the most exported fruit category by 2030. Global production has also been growing rapidly and is to reach 12 mln tonnes by 2030.

The industry of avocado farming in Morocco is currently at risk due to the deficit of water resources. Nevertheless, areas have been expanding in Morocco, and production is expected to increase by 20% year-over-year and reach its new high.
