The supply of broccoli coming from California is somewhat light right now compared to the planned levels of supply. “It is averaging about 20 percent short of the previous, current and coming week,” says Dan Holt, vice president of sales for Hitchcock Farms. “The supply is also lighter than last year around the same time.”
Of course, the broccoli season out of Salinas saw a later-than-normal start this year due to delayed plantings. In addition, things have been slower with interrupted growth from the cold and extremely wet weather in the spring in California. “This year, our biggest challenge has been catching up on broccoli plantings and turning the ground from the disruptive January and March storms,” says Holt.

Broccoli availability
Hitchcock Farms carries broccoli seasonally from mid-March through to December in 14-count, 18-count, Crowns, Short Cut Crowns and Supreme-Cut Crowns.
As for demand, it is increasing on the vegetable and it also is outpacing the current supply levels. “There is also generally increasing consumption of broccoli,” adds Holt. In turn, broccoli pricing has increased over the past few weeks and prices are higher than this time last year.
Looking ahead, broccoli supplies from California are expected to be shorter in the next few weeks.
