New strawberry variety allows early planting and production for up to seven months

In Brazil, the availability of the BRS DC25 Fênix cultivar contributes to greater autonomy for strawberry producers. Fruits from the BRS DC25 Fênix variety have a sweeter flavor, meeting the preference of Brazilian consumers, and are also more firm. This guarantees better durability during transport and longer shelf life.

The variety's early start of production allows for a shorter interval between planting and the start of harvest, ensuring uninterrupted production for up to seven months.

Embrapa Clima Temperado (RS) developed a national strawberry cultivar that stands out for its early onset of fruit production, which allows for a shorter interval between planting and the beginning of harvest, increasing the production window for up to seven months (from June to December) and extending the supply of quality fruit. For the producer, this maximizes the economic return by obtaining higher prices in a period before the main cultivars available in the market.

The development of the cultivar had the participation of Embrapa Hortaliças (DF), Embrapa Meio Ambiente (SP) and Embrapa Grape and Wine (RS).

Embrapa will open a public notice in the next few days and laboratories and nurseries interested in multiplying the new variety of strawberry will be able to join the call. The cultivar BRS DC25 (Fênix) is expected to be released in September.
