Debt-laden French retailer Casino's sales slow in Q1, shares sink
Sales growth at heavily indebted retailer Casino slowed in the first quarter, the company said, sending its shares down around 10% in early trade. The retailer, which has been selling assets to reduce its debt, is aiming to complete its 4.5bln euros ($4.99bln) disposal plan by the end of the year. Disposals at the end of the first quarter amounted to 4.2bln euros, it said.

Carrefour to open dozens of supermarkets in Israel next week, vowing to tackle costs
French supermarket chain Carrefour announced it will open its first 50 stores across Israel next week, aiming to increase competitiveness in the Israeli market. Tel Aviv will welcome nine branches, Herzliya four, Netanya four, Beersheba three, Ashdod three and Haifa three, in addition to dozens in smaller communities across the country on Tuesday, and with up to 100 more on the way by the end of the year.

Hy-Vee has resumed building a new distribution center in Cumming, Iowa, that had been paused last year. The warehouse, situated just south of Hy-Vee’s hometown of West Des Moines, will take up 635,000 square feet and house Lomar Distributing, the Midwestern food and drug retailer’s specialty products division.
