Good appetite for Malawian Alphonso mangoes

The harvest of Alphonso mangoes in Malawi will start in a couple of weeks. Australian based Sai World has been exporting these mangoes to the Indian mangoes for several years.

“This is an Indian variety of mango and Malawi can produce these in the Indian counter season. We have mainly shipped these mangoes to India where they been extremely popular and we are now expanding our markets to the Middle East, Vietnam, Cambodia and the UK if volumes allow,” said Sam Vasala from Sai World.

“They say the Malawi Alphonso mangoes are tastier than the Indian ones, they have high brix and are a very good quality fruit and can achieve 60USD per 3kg carton.”

Sai World works with the grower Malawi Mangoes, who also grow other varieties, the export volumes remain low at 250 tonnes, but production is increasing. Tommy Atkin mangoes are sold as dry product at the moment but Sam said they will look at exporting them fresh next if the cold chain can be improved.
