Mélissa Gea, Grand Etal Bio:

Growing supply of sweet potatoes on the French market

Grand Etal Bio is a French producer, importer and marketer based in Perpignan. This year, the company had its first sweet potato campaign, from November 15th 2021 until mid-March 2022, with nearly 15 tons of sweet potatoes spread over 4 hectares. But the weather conditions have forced the team to throw out 25% of its production due to humidity. “We have lost 2 ha because of the heavy rains that fell at that time,” explains Mélissa Gea, sales director at Grand Etal Bio.

The French production is growing
Originally from South America, the cultivation of sweet potatoes continues to grow in France. This increasing production results in an increasing supply on the market and, as a consequence, prices that are slightly lower than last year. “Prices have been rather average, from 1.30 to 1.50€ [1.36 to 1.56 USD], taking all calibers into account.”
