The supermarket chain Aldi bought more than 3,100 tons of seasonal fruits and vegetables of Spanish origin between March and May 2020, i.e. 27% more than in the same period of the previous year. This year the company plans to increase that volume by 10% to 15%.
Nearly 2,700 tons were of products such as strawberries, nectarines, melons, watermelons, and asparagus that came from Andalusian suppliers. Aldi also bought seasonal products such as peaches, melons, watermelons, nectarines, Paraguayans, platerinas, apricots, cherries, and plums from suppliers in Murcia, Catalonia, Extremadura, and Aragon. The retail chain also purchased calçots from Tarragona and artichokes from Alicante.
The company bets strongly on proximity products. In fact, 80% of its total assortment are products of national origin that come from more than 400 top-level national suppliers with whom the company establishes long-term relationships.
