The recent frosts in the province of Mendoza, which registered temperatures as low as -4° C, caused losses that still haven't been quantified in the region's fruit plantations.
There still are no official figures, but some entities have already expressed concern about the damage. The Association of Producers and Exporters of Fresh Fruits (Aspeff), for example, reported that the most affected areas were in the South and in the Uco Valley, although there is also damage in the eastern area.
"We think losses will be greater than suspected. It is still too premature to venture percentages, but there are areas that were hit very hard and there is talk of 50%," Raul Aruani.
According to the first surveys carried out in the South oasis, the frost mainly affected peach and d'Agen plum, a fruit that is more sensitive to low temperatures than the varieties for fresh consumption. The frosts also strongly affected almond crops.
"There are areas in farms that had no problems and other areas that were affected, especially the areas with early varieties," they stated.
