The pitahaya season has already started in the Yucatan peninsula and the fruit from the orchards of municipalities such as Quintana Roo, Chunjuju, Chun Ya, and Tepich can already be found in the state's different cities.
"Most of the pitahaya is sold abroad, but a some are sold in Valladolid, Merida, and Tizimin, among other places," stated merchant Luis Arceo.
According to Arceo, producers can receive up to 500 pesos per box of pitahayas. "However, when it is abundant they are only paid 100 pesos per box. That's why they prefer to bring it to market and sell it directly; they earn more that way."
"3 fruits are sold for 20 pesos here, and in the smallest calibers, 6 for 20 pesos," he said.
