The President of China, Xi Jinping, and the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, held a bilateral meeting within the framework of the XI summit of emerging powers -Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS)- in Brazil. In the meeting, both countries signed bilateral agreements in the areas of trade, food inspection, and industry with the aim of diversifying the commercial relationship and promoting an equal exchange between them.
The health protocols for the export of Chinese pears to Brazil and another for the sale of Brazilian melons to China stand out among the agreements signed. According to a statement issued by the Brazilian Government, the pear and melon protocols are the first signed with China on fruits. “China is the world's largest consumer of melons. In 2018, they consumed 15.6 million tons of melons,” the report states.
Melon will be the first fresh Brazilian fruit that enters China. In addition to diversifying the Brazilian export agenda to China, the green light can generate more opportunities for the national fruits, which are currently focused on the European market.
In addition to health protocols and treaties, Xi and Bolsonaro signed memoranda of understanding in the areas of transport; traditional, complementary, and integrated medicine; cooperation in the service sector; strengthening cooperation in investments, and cooperation in cultural and audiovisual exchange.
