Jinxiang County in Shandong is widely known as the "home of Chinese garlic". The official opening of the new garlic production season already took place several weeks ago. The market supply of fresh garlic is gradually growing. Ms. Annie Chen from Jining Fenduni Foodstuff Co., Ltd. shared her view on the current conditions of the Chinese garlic market: "Jinxiang is one of the major garlic production areas in China. The harvest seasons in this area are slightly different, depending on the weather conditions. Under regular conditions the harvest season begins every year on May 10th and continues until May 20th. The harvest proceeded smoothly this year because the weather conditions were excellent."
Fresh garlic
"The surface area devoted to garlic plantation this year declined in comparison with last year. In the end, however, the production volume per hectare increased. The product quality of garlic this production season is even better than last year. The color, appearance, and size are all better than last year. The harvest season was difficult last year because of extreme weather conditions. Eventually, when fresh garlic enters the market in large volumes, then the overall supply volume will rapidly grow and the price will fall, but for now the price of garlic still continues to rise. This does not accord with regular price fluctuations in the garlic market. The reason behind this price increase is not entirely clear. We should not dismiss the effect of speculation in the garlic market on the price development. Based on current market conditions we can predict that the price will not come down in the short term."
Fresh garlic
The export prices are also affected by the high price of garlic in the Jinxiang Market. Many overseas traders were hoping the arrival of fresh garlic would cause the price to fall, but that is not what happened. The effect on garlic export is obvious. "Only a small number of clients can afford to buy garlic at such high prices. The volume of orders is much smaller than usual. The general trend that we have observed in recent years is that the garlic export volume grows."
