High international demand favors exports

Peru: S&M Foods prepare to export avocados, paprika, and capsicum

The S&M Foods agricultural food company will start exporting fresh avocados to the United States and Europe due to the increase in international demand for this product. The first shipments are scheduled for the second half of this year and the company estimates that they will ship around 40 containers.

The avocados will come from the production areas of the provinces of Casmas and Chimbote.

In addition to avocados, the company has some 400 hectares of paprika cultivated along the coast, and 100 hectares of capsicum. Due to the growing popularity of these products, S&M Foods plans to increase the extensions of capsicum on the north coast, and start producing paprika in Oxapampa.

These products will be destined to the United States, Mexico, and Spain.

One of S&M Foods' objectives is to increase its presence in the capsicum segment. Thus, it expects to go from a 22% participation this year, to between 25% and 28%.

These crops are being moved towards the interior of the country due to the presence of the prodiplosis plagues that affect the sowing of paprika on the coast, as has happened in the plantations of Casma, Chimbote, Olmos, and Lambayeque.

New markets
S&M Foods is announcing an expansion of its capsicum supply in the Middle East, for which it plans to increase shipments of its products to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) by 50%.

Peru ships around 22,000 tons of paprika, 6,000 tons of which (22% share) will be marketed by the agro-exporter.

The company has two plants with a total size of nearly 9,000 square meters for processing and crushing capsicum, such as paprika, and guajillo, in Barranca (north of Lima).
