Peru: The volume of asparagus exports increased by 15% in 2018

In 2018 Peruvian exports of fresh, canned, and frozen asparagus amounted to 169,807,000 kilos, i.e. 15% more than the 147,708,000 kilos that the country dispatched in 2017.

This was stated by the executive director of the Peruvian Asparagus and Vegetables Institute (IPEH), Carlos Zamorano Macchiavello, who stressed that, despite the higher export volume, the value of shipments decreased by 1.5%, as it went from US $ 522,761,278 in 2017 to US $ 514,669,826 in 2018.

Fresh asparagus
Zamorano said that exports of fresh asparagus in 2018 amounted to 129,277,000 kilos (about US $ 375 million) compared to 110,427,000 kilos sent in 2017 (about US $ 390 million).

According to the Agrodata Peru website, the main destination market for fresh asparagus from Peru was the United States, which acquired the product for US $ 227,360,000, which accounts for 60.6% of the total. It was followed by the Netherlands with US $ 41,165,000, the United Kingdom with US $ 40,975,000, and Spain with US $ 28,705,000, among others.

The main exporter companies of fresh asparagus are: Beta Agroindustrial Complex, Danper Trujillo, Drokasa Agricultural Society, FloridaBlanca, Agro Export Ica, and Santa Sofia del Sur, among others.

Canned asparagus
In 2018, Peru exported 30,130,000 kilos (US $ 95 million) of canned asparagus, while in the previous year it shipped out 28,806,000 kilos (US $ 95 million).

According to Agrodata Peru, the main destination markets were Spain with US $ 41,184,000, France with US $ 19,454,000, the United States with US $ 12,318,000, Germany with US $ 10,199,000, and Italy with US $ 2,226,000, among others.

The main exporting companies of canned asparagus were Green Peru, Viru, Danper Trujillo, Talsa, Conservas Vegetales Cerro Verde, and AguaLima.

Frozen asparagus
The executive director of the IPEH said that in 2018 Peru had exported 10,400,000 kilos (US $ 45 million) of frozen asparagus, while in 2017 it exported 8,475,000 kilos (US $ 37 million) of this product.

According to Agrodata Peru, the main destination countries were the United States, Japan, and Spain, which together acquired 87% of the total. Other markets destinations, although smaller, were Italy, Belgium, and Canada, among others.
