Michoacan is Mexico's leading producer of blackberries with more than 12,500 hectares of blackberry and a production of more than 260,143 tons a year, which accounts for more than 95% of the country's total production. It is followed by far by the state of Jalisco, which only produces 7 thousand tons per year.
Rubén Medina Niño, the head of the Ministry of Agricultural Food Development and Rural Development (Sedrua), said that Mexico was the main producer of blackberries in the world, as it produced 270,399 tons of blackberry, 95% of which was produced in Michoacan.
He also said that it was important for the government of Silvano Aureoles Conejo to promote this crop, which is why they were giving great importance to phytosanitary campaigns, technified irrigation, and support to producers through macro-tunnels and greenhouses, to guarantee exports of this fruit.
Michoacan is also responsible for 97.7% of Mexico's blackberry production value, as it exports the fruit to 31 countries of the world. The United States is the main destination, with 65,243 tons. In addition, Michoacan and Mexico account for more than 17% of the world's blackberry production, which places it as a global leader in this production.
Medina Niño also highlighted that this crop's production volume had an outstanding growth of 8.8%, due to the improvement in cultivation techniques, which has been a determining factor in the evolution of the process to achieve greater and better yields, in quality, quantity, and price.
Other states that produce blackberry in Mexico are: Colima which produces 1,600 tons, Baja California, 722 tons, Guanajuato, 99 tons, and other states that have just started to grow this crop.
