Seasonal rainfall in India: Vegetable prices soaring in Mumbai
Heavy rains in vegetable growing areas have led to a steep rise in the price of most vegetables. The quality of vegetables has also dropped resulting in less availability of vegetables in the retail market. Almost every year, there is a scarcity of vegetables during this season as either the crops get damaged or new crops take time to grow.
The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi claims the supply of vegetables has dipped by 20%, resulting in a steep price hike. Tomato, which sold at around Rs 12 to 14 per kg (€0.15-0.18), is being sold at Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg (€0.38-0.50).
According to traders, there won’t be much respite from rising vegetable prices any time soon. “This is an yearly phenomenon when supply dips and price rises,” a trader from the APMC told india.com. He added that due to heavy rainfall, crops get damaged. However, traders believe that plenty of rain hints at the possibility of a good crop, later in the year.
