Spain: Banana plant greenhouse catches fire in Gran Canaria

This Monday, a fire burned about two square kilometres of greenhouses devoted to the cultivation of banana plants in the area of Los Moriscos, between Carrizal and Majoreras, in the municipality of Ingenio, Gran Canaria.

The Fire Department of the Consortium of Gran Canaria, as well as Civil Protection units, the Local Police of Ingenio and the Guardia Civil arrived to the place after receiving a warning call at around 5:35 pm. The owners of the facilities also supplied some means to help in the tackling of the fire, including access to a water tank. After eight o'clock in the afternoon, the firefighters managed to put out the fire.

A strong wind was recorded at that time, which made the fire's extinction more difficult. The investigation to find out the cause of the fire is still underway.
