William Nannes, J.P. Beemsterboer Food Traders:

"Empty orders on the onion market"

Traders on the onion market are looking for orders to fill at the moment. "It is not busy, as is clear when you look at the export figures. We are focused on exports outside of Europe, but there are many empty orders", says William Nannes, a buyer at the Dutch J.P. Beemsterboer Food Traders. "Shipments are being sent, like the one to Mauritania this week, but with no significant volumes."

According to this buyer, the situation is not likely to improve anytime soon. "There would have to be a lot more demand from somewhere like Brazil. Current exports are not, however, suggesting this and I do not see that scenario playing out at the moment. The onions will come, especially if we have a late spring. We are plodding along, but things have been easier."

"The problem is that grower prices are pretty much fixed. These prices are causing pressure - there is the export week with 15,000 tonnes, at most but packers who have a sorting capacity of 35,000 tonnes", says William. "There are also large price differences between large and medium-sized onions. This slows sales as buyers do not want to sit with a whole lot of medium-sized product."
