According to Eurostat data, Poland imported almost 370,000 tonnes of bananas in 2016. In four years, imports have increased by 66 percent. Polish consumers ate an average of 6.8 kilos/year.
According to trade data for the first 11 months of 2017, the volume of domestic imports has increased once again and amounted to 448 thousand tonnes. Poland imported the most bananas from Ecuador, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. The share of these countries in the country's total imports in 2016 was 82%, while in the first 11 months of 2017 it was 81%.
The data shows that Polish consumers are eating more and more bananas. In 2013, the annual consumption was 5.4 kilos/person, and in 2016, it reached 6.84 kilos/person.
Bananas are the second most popular and most-consumed fruit in the country after apples. In fact, their consumption is growing faster than total fruit consumption, explains Anna Kitala, agricultural market expert at BGŻ BNP Paribas.
According to Eurostat data, banana imports into the EU from non-EU countries exceeded 5.5 million tonnes in 2016.
