Visitors of the Christian Sulser GmbH point of sale in the Munich Wholesale Market Hall can not avoid the grapes on display. The sweet fruits from Sicily are part of the daily business of the wholesale business, owner Rainer Simon confirms. “The La Reginella from Italy is only available in Munich. Unfortunately, the season is slowly coming to an end. That is visible in the quality of the last Simpson Seedless. The fruits are now a mix of reds and brights, rather than being evenly rosé. They did not develop properly due to the weather.”
Normally, the quality of Italian table grapes is excellent and consistent, says Simon. “The big advantage of this variety is that they have the opportunity to develop nicely on the vine. That's why this strain is also very tasty.” To extend the season a little further, the wholesaler is currently offering stored goods with a so-called winter protection pack, so that the fruits can be preserved. The prices currently fluctuate between 2.20 and 2.30 euros against 1.80 to 2.00 euros per kg in September and October.
Specialists
Apart from the La Reginella grapes, the assortment of Christian Sulser GmbH is mainly characterized by seasonal products such as blood oranges, berries, mushrooms, asparagus and chestnuts. During his more than 40-year career in the wholesale market, the tendency has gradually shifted from specialist retailers to diversity. Simon: “In the past there were real specialists in the wholesale market, but now everyone can offer everything. This leads to an oversupply of the whole product range, and to misunderstandings. For example, we have the real chestnuts from Italy on sale, but many sell sweet chestnuts in their place.”
