Indian orange production troubled

In the Indian district of Nagpur, during the orange season, the rates are expected to be reasonable. This year however, buyers are disappointed due to the rising prices of the oranges. Fruit wholesaler Abdul Majid explains these prices: "Unseasonal rains in October and November damaged thousands of trees. While we used to get 50 to 60 tonnes of oranges every week, this year it is only 27 to 35 tonnes.”

The oranges grown in the region have a huge market, nationally and internationally. According to the Times of India orange dealers are now aiming for the American market, where Nagpur oranges are competing quite well with their Californian counterparts. The popularity of Nagpur oranges has been increasing in the U.S. This makes it even more unfortunate that production in Nagpur is down 55 percent compared to last year."
