French producers grow artichokes in Spain to avoid gales

Sant Boi artichokes are among the most appreciated in Catalonia. This fame has now crossed borders and will give rise to a unique exchange. Attracted by the artichokes of Sant Boi, a group of producers from the south of France has decided to entrust part of their production to the Cooperativa Agrària Santboiana, which will thus be exporting for the first time in its history.

In the south of France, the most demanded artichoke variety is different to that from Sant Boi. It is known as Symphony and is more purple, taller and more elongated. But they are having real problems to cultivate their crops because of the impact of strong gales that spoil them. For this reason, French producers have opted to grow their variety in Sant Boi and then export it.

Good initial results
"They first tried with a small quantity of artichokes, but they visited us recently to see how the production went and they were so happy that they decided to plant more," says Ció Lerma, counclilor of the Sant Boi City Council. "They have started cultivating a two hectare plantation and if things go well, as it so far seems it will, they will plant even more," says the councillor.

Last year, 600,000 kilos of artichokes were grown in Sant Boi, and thanks to the French investment, this year's volume is expected to exceed one million kilos. "It is a good opportunity for our products to become better known and for us to establish more relationships," says Ció Lerma.
