Poland: Heavy rain affects cabbage harvest

Due to frequent rainfall, this year's cabbage harvest may take longer to be completed. Forecasts for the coming days are not optimistic. Vegetable producers point not only to problems with the delay of field work and harvesting, but also to the increased pressure of fungal diseases due to the presence of residual water in the soil.

Vegetable producers in the Mazowieckie voivodeship report that losses in cabbage yields on its plantations may reach as much as 30 percent. The harvest started in early September and will probably last until mid-November.

The Central Statistical Office (CSO) estimated this year's cabbage harvest at around 1 million tonnes. It is worth recalling that the meteorological conditions this summer have varied widely depending on the region. In the north-west of the country there was an excess of rainfall, and many vegetable plantations were flooded, while in the south-eastern part of Poland, there was insufficient moisture in the soil, which may have a negative impact on the potential yield of brassica vegetables.
