Bulgaria topped the ranking, with a total of 133,000 tonnes of pumpkins produced in 2016 and almost 12,000 hectares of land devoted to this crop.
Spain, with 97,000 tonnes, surpassed France, which produced 96,000 in the same period, and also Germany (87,000) and Portugal (75,000).
Up to 3,170 hectares of land are devoted to pumpkin production in Spain. In this regard, only Bulgaria (11,760 hectares), as well as Germany and France (with around 4,000 hectares each) have a bigger acreage.
Eurostat has published the pumpkin production statistics in the Member States on the occasion of the celebration of Halloween, which takes place on Tuesday, with pumpkin as the most characteristic vegetable.
