Italy: Brassica campaign starts in south-east Bari

This is rather new for the south-east Bari area, as harvesting of the first white and Roman cauliflowers started on 22nd October 2017.

"The season has just started and, due to the summer drought, we are expecting 20% less produce. Demand from both domestic and foreign retailers is rather lively at the moment, as temperatures are dropping thus pushing consumption. We hope winter will be cold precisely for this reason," explains producer Nicola Coniglio.

The season unfolds between 20th October and 20th May on 120 hectares. "We are currently harvesting the short-cycle Flamenco, Ovindoli and Frisca varieties, which will be followed by long-cycle cultivars or by the second transplants of short-cycle ones."

At the moment, quotations are €0.60-0.90/kg. "Domestic and Swiss retailers require produce without leaves, while Austria, Germany and Eastern Europe prefer 6-8 piece crates of crowned produce."
