Corn from British Columbia saw strong 2017 numbers

B.C. corn saw a solid season for 2017. “We were up by about 12 per cent,” says Greg Holmes of Delta, BC.-based BC Fresh Vegetables Inc., a seasonal shipper/grower of sweet corn. “There were a couple of reasons. The weather was good so there was more consumption. That makes a big difference. Also of our customer base, 95 per cent of it is going into retail and we have some good strong support. A couple of our growers also put in late plantings so they were basically ready and mature by the middle of September.” BC Fresh did start the season approximately two weeks late because of the late spring.

Retailers support boosted the season
In fact, the weather held up so much that the retailers, who traditionally end the corn season around Labor Day weekend, extended the season by 2-3 weeks this year because the sales were so strong. In fact, for BC Fresh, it had to source some corn from the competing Alberta province to reach the demand. “We couldn’t get the orders filled so we brought in product and it worked out okay,” says Holmes, noting that BC tends to enjoy being a bit of an isolated market with little competition barring Alberta and Washington, who tends to be in the market for 5-6 weeks only.

Solid pricing
With strong demand and supply came equally strong pricing of course. “We were in the low 20s most of the year, so a couple of dollars more than last year,” he says. “We just started on corn three years ago and it’s been a good boost for our numbers.”
