Cabbage from the city of Varaždin is one of the latest Croatian products to receive the EU geographical origin label, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Tuesday.
The European Commission has unanimously agreed that ‘Varaždinsko zelje’ will now have EU geographical protection status after a request for protection from the Ministry of Agriculture was heard in Brussels yesterday.
EU protected geographical status helps protect product names from misuse and imitation and helps consumers by giving them information concerning the specific character of the products.
A number of other Croatian products which already have been protected includes pršut from Dalmatia, Drniš, Krk and Istria, extra virgin olive oil from Cres, mandarins from Neretva, sour cabbage from Ogulin, Kulen from Baranja and potatoes from Lika.
Protection status for ‘Varaždinsko zelje’ will come into effect once the EU officially announce it in its bulletin.
