Tasmanian Micro-green grower nominated for Coles Farmer of the Year

Developing quality soil is one of the secrets behind the success of one Tasmanian grower who was recently nominated as Coles 2017 Farmer of the Year.

Lynda Stellamaris and Mark Fonderie, founded the new nominee, called Naked Carrot. The company won the gong for herbs and spices champion at this year’s Hobart Fine Food awards, and the Coles award is next on their list.

“We won six gold medals and five silvers at last year’s awards, but this is the first time we have taken out champion and reserve champion. It’s wonderful,” Ms Stellamaris said.

The business is based in the Hobart suburb of Mt Nelson. It sells micro-greens and different salad mixes, all grown without chemicals, to chefs around the state.

“The awards are confirmation that we’re on the right track with what we’re doing. And our staff are totally awesome,” Ms Stellamaris said.

She said quality soil was the key for not only to the health of the plant but to the taste as well.

Naked Carrot is an entrant in this year’s Farmer of the Year awards, run by The Weekly Times. The awards search for the best farmers across Australia, those leading the way, who constantly strive to improve their business and are finding success in their efforts.
